Officer involved shooting investigation in Pinon Hills

On Saturday October 10, 2015, an employee of the Phelan-Pinon Hills Community Services District responded to an alarm on Snowcap Avenue. This location houses two large water tanks and is secured by a fence. The employee discovered a male adult and a gray BMW inside the fenced area. The male claimed he had explosives and made several irrational statements. The Sheriff’s Department was then notified.

At 3:31 p.m. deputies from the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station responded and contacted the male. The male continued to make irrational statements, displayed unusual behavior and would not follow direction given by deputies or surrender to them. The male entered the vehicle and drove a short distance within the fenced property. During this time a loud noise was heard leading the deputies to believe an explosion may have occurred. The deputies retreated a short distance while waiting for additional resources, including the Sheriff’s Bomb Arson Detail.

After additional personnel arrived to assist, a perimeter was established to prevent the vehicle or any potential explosives from leaving the area. The male who was still inside the vehicle accelerated and drove toward the gate and deputies. An officer involved shooting occurred and as a result, the male was fatally wounded.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail is conducting the investigation of the incident, including the officer involved shooting.
